CORSON AVE. LOFTS
This site, in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood, bridges the existing industrial zone west of Corson Avenue and the fabric of small cottages to the east of the site. The design of these unit merges these two elements as well. Street facing units feature large strips of windows to let light into a flexible first floor that could be used for living or commercial uses while the upper two stories house the needs for daily living. Rear units feature roll-up garage doors on the ground level to allow for indoor-outdoor living or for the ground floor to house shop space. Concrete floors throughout all of the units add an additional layer of durability to spaces designed for commercial or living.
The exterior design also took inspiration from the neighborhood’s industrial character. We designed the units with a clear two story base and recessed third story to reduce scale but also recall industrial buildings with irregular penthouses above boxy forms. Large graphic address numbers over each unit clearly signify the entry points, each protected by a metal canopy.
